About Alex

AI implementation, education and ongoing research.

About this page

I work across AI implementation, education and research. I’m based in Mount Barker, South Australia, where I lead Unlocking Technology, teach at Adelaide University, and undertake doctoral research into how SME leaders respond to AI.

I founded Refuge AI in December 2022 and co-founded Human Compatible in June 2023. Since June 2024, I’ve led Unlocking Technology, combining technical implementation with helping organisations develop the capability to use and improve their systems.

My earlier experience spans entrepreneurship education, course design and university venture development. I also completed a technical analyst engagement with the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing in 2025.

My interests connect practical business adoption with broader questions about education, work, ownership and human dignity. This site brings together my longer-form writing and selected public contributions, with dates and links so readers can see both the argument and its context.

A personal perspective

I’m a devout Catholic, a husband and a father of three young children. My faith is at the core of my identity, and I pay close attention to the Vatican’s teaching on AI. That perspective shapes the questions I ask about technology and the future.

Practice

At Unlocking Technology, I combine technical implementation with helping people develop the capability to use and improve their systems. The practice is developing an approach to building software with teams and transferring operating knowledge and ownership to them.
